Migrate an Existing WhatsApp Number to a Business Account

You can use a phone number that is already registered with the WhatsApp Messenger or the WhatsApp Business App.

Remember to back up your chat history from the WhatsApp Business App.

Once you migrate a phone number to the WhatsApp Business Platform you can no longer use that number on the WhatsApp Business App.

To migrate a number, you must first delete that WhatsApp account.

  1. In Business Manager, add the phone number that is already registered with WhatsApp Messenger or WhatsApp Business App.
  2. Assign a display name to your phone number, following the display name guidelines. Submit it for review by the WhatsApp team. You will be notified when the display name is approved. You won't be able to download a certificate if your WhatsApp account on your Android or iPhone is still active.
  3. Open WhatsApp Messenger or WhatsApp Business app on your Android or iPhone.
  4. Navigate to Settings > Account.
  5. Select Delete my account. Messages sent to this phone number will be queued in the meantime.
  6. Follow the steps to delete the WhatsApp account for that phone number. It may take up to 3 minutes for the disconnected number to become available.

Once the number is available, return to Business Manager and refresh your browser window. You can now download a certificate and proceed with the registration process.

After registration, the queued messages that were sent when you deleted your WhatsApp account will be released with no rate limit and delivered to your phone.

Delete a Phone Number from a Business Account

Requirements

  • Only a business admin for the WhatsApp Business Account can delete a phone number.
  • A number can not be deleted if the business has sent paid messages within the last 30 days using that number.
  • If the business has sent paid messages in the past 30 days, you will be redirected to the Insights page showing the date of the last paid message. You will be able to delete the phone number 30 days after this date.

To delete a phone number, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Business Manager, go to your Business Settings page.
  2. Go to Settings > Business Settings > WhatsApp Accounts > WhatsApp Manager > Phone Numbers.
  3. From the WhatsApp Manager, find the phone number that you wish to delete. Click on the trash icon under Delete in the upper right.

4. You may be requested to provide the password for your Facebook account password connected to the WABA if the phone number had the status “Connected” previously. Phone numbers deleted from a WABA cannot be used again for another account.

Banned Phone Numbers

If a phone number is banned by WhatsApp it cannot be added to a WABA.

If you believe the phone number was banned in error, you can file an appeal with Trust and Safety Appeal.
